History of Old Town Scottsdale
Before Scottsdale was ever Scottsdale, the area originally belonged to the Pima people. In 1888, U.S. Army Chaplain Winfield Scott purchased 640 acres in the Salt River Valley as he saw the potential of using the land for agricultural purposes. Scottsdale was named after Scott in 1894, and later became incorporated in 1951 and adopted the slogan “The West’s Most Western Town.” What was once a quiet settlement transformed into a cultural and commercial hub thanks to the growth of tourism, the development of art galleries, and Scottsdale’s reputation as a luxury destination. Today, Old Town is known for its walkable streets lined with boutique shops, eclectic art, historic architecture, and a bustling food and nightlife scene—all while still preserving its Old West heritage.
Old Town Historic Landmarks
Little Red Schoolhouse
The Little Red Schoolhouse, originally known as Scottsdale Grammar School, was built in 1909 to replace Scottsdale’s first schoolhouse, built in 1896. Little Red Schoolhouse has served as the Scottsdale City Hall and Justice Court, the Scottsdale Public Library, and the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce. Today, Little Red Schoolhouse is known as the Scottsdale Historical Museum and takes visitors along on a journey through Scottsdale’s history with photographs, artifacts, and more.
Old Adobe Mission
The Old Adobe Mission is the oldest standing church in Scottsdale and one of only three adobe structures remaining in the area. Built in the late 1910s by the first Mexicans who settled in Scottsdale, the building features stunning Spanish Revival Colonial architecture and handcrafted stained glass windows. Same day tours are available.
Parada del Sol Rodeo Museum
Housed in the historic Noriega Livery building, the Parada del Sol Rodeo Museum showcases artifacts and memorabilia dating back to 1953, sharing the rich rodeo history of Scottsdale. You’ll find bull ropes, saddles, and original Parada del Sol posters featuring artwork by renowned artist Kenneth M. Freeman.
